AMD or Age-Related Macular Degeneration is a very serious eye disease that can be detected by an eye doctor when you get a comprehensive eye examination. However, if you have been diagnosed with AMD, you will be referred to a Retina specialist in Laurel for further evaluation and treatment.
Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a very serious, incurable eye disease. The disease occurs when the macula, which is the central part of the retina, deteriorates. AMD is the leading cause of vision loss for people over 60 years old. It gradually destroys the patient’s central vision that is mandatory for seeing objects clearly. This leads to difficulty and interference with the ability to perform normal everyday tasks. In the very early stages of AMD, people may not experience any symptoms at all and consequently may not be aware they have it. Signs and symptoms of age-related macular degeneration include: loss of color perception and the presence of dark, blurry spots in the middle of the field of vision. The two forms of macular degeneration are called dry and wet AMD. In patients with dry macular degeneration, excessive drusen or yellow deposits that are present cause vision loss. Wet macular degeneration is less common but much more serious. In patients with wet macular degeneration, the blood vessels leak blood and fluid into the retina due to the growth of abnormal blood vessels under the macula. If an eye doctor detects macular degeneration, he’ll do further tests to confirm the diagnosis. Once it has been confirmed, the patient will need to go to specialist for further evaluation and treatment. The eye doctor will refer the patient to a Retina specialist in Laurel like ours at The Retina Group of Washington. Although, at this time, there is no cure for macular degeneration, early diagnosis and treatment is crucial since there are treatments that can possibly slow down the vision loss or reduce the severity of AMD if treatment begins early enough.
